they crush I crash

Bright pashminas: the cure for the common sling
I rarely post videos, but I thought we all deserved a little escapism today. My friend David O'Donnell took this video the day I smashed myself up. Look at all that soft, glittering powder and blue sky. My favorite thing about this video is probably David's cheerful Australian-lilting Woohoo! commentary. Click full screen to make this interactive experience more like a movie theater and less like a postage stamp.

My shoulder is still painful and visibly deformed (oh, I love being able to say that, I've only ever been visibly deformed once before, when I chopped off the top of my finger in a door). On the plus side, now I match Will, who has the bony, permanently messed up shoulder look of the devout paddler, and he makes it look really good.

Exercise and standing with good posture have been tough since this day, which is driving me batshit, and I wasted all the pain killers, so I'm starting to think this whole injury situation was not a great deal for me. As long as dream-team trainer Ren can help me get things in order and save the climbing season ahead....I still say it's worth it. I mean, just look at this day....

That day looks like it was a lot of fun. Until you crashed, of course.
Really enjoyed the video though, it completely mellowed me out here.

I found your blog through Kelle Hampton and your guest post reeled me in! And then, I get to your blog and am blinded by your corgi...as a corgi lover for since I was 6, it was just too much. My sister lives in Portland and has two corgis, just a little fyi. Best of luck on your journey. Abby

Your guest post on Kelle Hampton's blog reeled me in. And much to my happiness, when I got to your blog I was blinded by your corgi. (I've been a corgi lover since 1988...and once you go corgi, you never go back) My sister actually lives in Portland and has two corgis, just a little fyi. Glad to have found your blog and good luck on your journey through this wild life.

AHH! That video makes me want to run to the snow! What a bittersweet day for you. Injuries blow but make me so appreciative of when I'm running at 100%. You'll be back at it before you know it.

i'm sorry, the video is fantastic, but "batshit" is my go to word! i tell my co-workers all the time when i'm trying to finish a project that they are driving me batshit. hah. that totally made me laugh.

What type of camera does your friend use? Me and the hubs are thinking of getting a "Go-Pro" camera for our little motorcycle adventures. But I wonder what else is out there. The Go-Pro looks pretty awesome....

I think it is very fashionista of you to use a pashmina for a sling. I only know what a pashmina is from reading the blogs of fashion forward chicks. Otherwise I'd have no idea they existed. If it's not found in the jeans and t-shirt section, well........

Skiing looks fun (but sorta scary). I've never tried it, but then, I live in Alabama and there's not much in the way of snow around here!

Hi. Melina. I found your blog through Kelle Hampton's blog. I think your words and pictures are both beautiful and inspirational. I hope to raise my daughter with as much bravery and talent as you possess. I look forward to reading your work in the future. Also, I am a member of a national Mom's board, and I am going to share your work with them as I am sure they will love your work as much as I have. Us Moms are all alike. ;) I hope you are on the mend!

Katrina,

thank you. what awesome words to hear. you know, if you pick up a pencil and write, that makes you a writer, so...I don't know if you're still dreaming of being a writer, but let me be a solid supporter of that dream.

thanks again. your words go so far....

Deanna-
This video was shot with a go pro. Get one! I don't have one, because I would just be intolerable if i started videoing everything on top of taking pictures. All my friends have them and love them.

I shoot primarily with my iphone now (sadly) but I'm gearing up for a nikon d 7000. i was using a nikon d 700 up until this summer, then it died.

good luck!

Never get to ski powder like that in good old PA! AS soon as the kids perfect their skiing skills we are taking a trip West!

Carrie-

If you ever find yourself in Vermont, get thee to Athena's boutique (there's one in montpelier and burlington.) it's heaven.

I have to say, this is one of the coolest videos I have ever watched. When I tree ski, all I ever see are the smallest openings between trees and branches. I sweat profusely and stop, well, basically every turn. I saw at least 10 times in this video when I FOR SURE would have panicked, rocked back on my heels and fallen.
This is awesome.

You are awesome! You remind me of being "young" seeing as now I am getting close to 40 with 2 little kids... You poor thing though. You are gorgeous and adventurous and I hope you snag that super handsome Will!!!!! I'm following you! And, if you ever need a place to stay on the French Riviera, hit me up!

I want to go to there!!!!!!
Those trees beg of many a trip. I am in heaven most when the tree branches brush by my head and I can feel the deep powder on which I float. Lordy, you have me aching for a trip the mountains.
